These are all signs of sleep apnoea, a potentially serious health condition that affects around 7.8% of men in Australia, according to the latest large study of more than 13,000 Australian men.

Do you snore loudly enough to be heard through closed doors?

Does your partner complain about your snoring?

Have you been told you stop breathing during your sleep?

Do you have high blood pressure?

Do you have a family history of sleep apnoea?

Do you have a neck circumference greater than 43cm (men) and 40cm (women)?

Are you overweight or have a BMI more than 30?

Do you have a large neck size (more than 43cm or more for men and 40.6cm or more for women)?

If you ticked yes to one or two of these answers you are at moderate risk of sleep apnoea. If you ticked more than two, you are at significant risk of sleep apnoea.

Sleep apnoea increases the risk of heart disease, hypertension and the risk of daytime accidents (such as falling asleep at the wheel).It also increases the risk of diabetes (apnoea increases insulin resistance).

Emerging evidence also shows sleep apnoea is linked to fatty liver disease in both children and adults.
